Ohio Center for Innovative Immunosuppressive Therapeutics

Over-reaction or dysregulation of the immune system causes common diseases, such as autoimmune and allergic disorders and organ graft rejection. Currently available immunosuppressive drugs are not readily applicable to many patients due to serious adverse effects and extremely high costs. The purpose of establising the OCIIT is to boost our ongoing collaborative efforts to develop and commercialize newer generations of immunosuppressants designed to inhibit only pathogenic forms of immunological reactions. Twenty investigators from The University of Toledo and Case Western Reserve University will collaborate in this effort.
The OCIIT will function as a) an academic research base for newly recruited scholars, b) R&D infrastructure to coordinate interdisciplinary research, c) a state-of-the-art technology center, d) a focal discussion point, e) a translational research unit to conduct clinical trials of newly developed drugs and f) an academia-industry interface for commercialization.
